Community involvement, support, and education are vital to addressing one of America’s most significant health challenges.
According to the National Institutes of Health, ten percent of American adults experience a substance use disorder in their lifetimes — more than 23 million people. Nearly half of Americans report having a friend, or family member addicted to drugs, according to Pew Research. Substance use disorder is among the leading causes of preventable deaths. Despite the longstanding prevalence of substance use disorders and their damaging effects, lacking education and stigma persists, causing feelings of shame, guilt, and embarrassment that keep people affected by these disorders from seeking treatment.
