Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Intensive outpatient program (IOP) for addiction, co-occurring disorders, mental health conditions, and trauma using coordinated medical care and support services

Addiction, co-occurring disorders, and mental health conditions are some of the most complex medical problems. Effectively treating them requires an especially comprehensive array of services and an extended period of continuing care and support. Like other chronic medical conditions, behavioral health conditions typically require ongoing management and lifestyle changes that create the conditions for reduced symptoms and lasting recovery. New Paradigm Recovery offers an intensive outpatient program and an outpatient program employing a broad range of techniques and experienced clinicians to treat these conditions thoroughly.

Comprehensive addiction and mental health treatment plans vary based on numerous personal factors. One’s specific medical conditions and history, trauma histories, family system issues, legal problems, professional licensure requirements, and cultural or spiritual considerations inform a coordinated approach and set of services and support that comprise their personalized care plan.

New Paradigm Recovery begins each client case with an in-depth assessment and diagnosis, which may include, with a client’s explicit permission, a review of medical records, communication with other care providers and therapists, lawyers, or other professionals, and identified family members. New Paradigm Recovery clinicians may request labs or other medical tests, including neuropsychological and executive function testing, and use various measurements to ascertain a client’s range of conditions, symptoms, and treatment needs. In addition to providing the basis for a full and complete diagnosis, these assessments identify the assets, liabilities, and resources that need to be considered when planning long-term treatment and services.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) Explained

Intensive Outpatient is a level of care designated by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). IOPs offer treatment for addiction and co-occurring disorders, providing a minimum of nine hours of services each week. The number of hours, types of therapy, and mix of individual and group sessions depend on the client’s needs and the program’s structure.

IOPs are often popular because they offer convenience and flexibility. Unlike residential care, clients can receive specialized treatment while continuing to manage work, family, school, and other responsibilities. However, it’s essential to determine the right level of care with a qualified clinician. In some cases, clients may require a higher level of care before starting an IOP. Factors like previous treatment failures, severe symptoms, or challenging home environments can indicate the need for more intensive care before transitioning to an Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program.

Providing comprehensive care often means adding parallel services to a client’s IOP treatment plan.

Identifying untreated medical conditions may require specialized care to remove barriers to recovery and maintain long-term success. In some cases, this intervention can be life-saving. We refer clients to trusted specialists for conditions such as eating disorders, neurological issues, learning or thought disorders, liver disease from alcohol use, psychosis, suicidal thoughts or attempts, and chronic pain.

New Paradigm Recovery also maintains strong relationships with high-quality wellness providers, therapists, physicians, and specialists throughout Washington, DC, and beyond. These connections allow us to provide effective resource referrals to ensure clients receive the additional care they may need for a successful recovery.
